Lady Falcons claw Lady Chiefs to take Group B lead

Adamson University hurdled erstwhile unbeaten Arellano University in straight sets, 25-20, 25-22, 25-16, Saturday to take the solo lead in Group B of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Lady Falcons gave head coach Air Padda her first consecutive victories since she assumed the post last year. Adamson improved to 2-0 win-loss slate.

It’s an accomplishment sometimes it could be really small for other teams but this was huge for us,” said Padda.

Skipper Jema Galanza led the Lady Falcons assault with 18 points, 16 coming off attacks while Eli Soyud, who had a career-high 27 points in Adamson’s five-set win over University of the Philippines, finished with nine markers.

The Lady Falcons poured 46 attack points and were active on defense with five kill blocks, 65 digs including 21 coming from Galanza and 28 excellent receptions, 20 courtesy of libero Tonnie Ponce, to frustrate the reigning NCAA champions.

I wasn’t expecting this (sweep). I was expecting a better fight,” Padda said of their surprisingly easy win. “I have never seen them (Arellano) play in person, only on TV so I wasn’t sure how strong their middles were.

The Lady Chiefs absorbed their first loss in three outings.

Only Jovielyn Prado scored in double figures for Arellano U with 11 while Andrea Marzan and Anne Esguerra combined for only 15 markers. Regine Arocha had a quiet outing with only two points.
