The Philippine women's national volleyball team (PWNVT) is off to a rousing start in its bid to end an 18-year medal-less drought in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
The Alyssa Valdez-led nationals made light work of host Cambodia, who looked every bit a first timer in the international stage. The Filipino squad routed the Cambodians in straight sets, 25-5, 25-5, 25-5, and were never threatened in its opening day assignment in women’s volleyball action on Tuesday at the Indoor Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The team, bannered by players from the PVL, was so in command the entire match that coach Jorge Edson Souza de Brito did not have to call a timeout at any point.
Incidentally, de Brito did not field in Valdez, who was named the team’s skipper back in April and is widely expected to see action in Cambodia. That long-awaited return to action, though, will have to wait, as the PWNVT did not need The Phenom’s hard-hitting attacks—at least not yet.
After breezing past Cambodia, the Filipino lady spikers will get their first acid test on Wednesday against regional powerhouse and perennial silver medalist Vietnam, who will be looking to end its string of bridesmaid finishes—10 silver medals in the last 11 SEA Games—and win a breakthrough gold.
Catch Valdez and the rest of the PWNVT go up against Vietnam at 6:00 p.m. tonight on Wednesday, only on One Sports and One Sports+.
Just a clarification. The score was 25-5, 25-5, 25-5.
