The Philippine women’s volleyball team suffered a 21-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-27, and 6-15 defeat to Kazakhstan at the start of their 2023 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship campaign on Wednesday night in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

Holding a 2-1 set advantage, the Jorge Edson Souza de Brito-led national women’s volleyball squad struggled to close the match in the fourth set as Kazakhstan forced a decider.

Kazakhstan carried the momentum in the fifth set as they surged to a 6-1 start, but the Philippines relied on consecutive points from Alyssa Solomon and Nina Ytang to cut the deficit to 3-6.

As Kazakhstan pulled to a 9-4 lead, Evangeline Alinsug connected for Team Philippines to make it a 5-9 score, but the latter unloaded six straight points to complete their come-from-behind win.

Team Philippines, which dropped to 0-1 in the Group D standings, will hope to bounce back when they face powerhouse China on Thursday afternoon.
