Ateneo de Manila University scored a huge win over Adamson University to end their two-game losing streak.
The Blue Eagles soared over the Lady Falcons, 25-19, 25-19, 22-25, in the UAAP Season 86 women's volleyball tournament, Wednesday night at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Sobe Buena and Lyann De Guzman led the Ateneans after they put up 22 points each, while team captain Roma Mae Doromal finished with a 19-dig, 16-reception game.
Buena, who hit the game-winning kills to end the game, also had 10 digs, while De Guzman also had an all-around game after she produced nine digs and eight receptions.
On the other hand, AC Miner and Zel Tsunashima finished with 12 markers each.
"I'm so happy with how the team played all the time with energy," said Ateneo head coach Sergio Veloso after the game.
"They followed the tactics. And the most important [thing], we used our service because the service is the first attack. You can make a big job with this skill," he added.
After already dominating the first two sets, the Blue Eagles suddenly saw a furious attack from the Lady Falcons in the third as Adamson went on a nine-to-nothing spurt to erase Ateneo's lead and overtake them, 21-20, after an attack by Mayang Nique.
De Guzman tied the game after her own kill, but a service error gave the lead to Adamson again, 22-21.
Lucille Almonte and Miner exchanged hits in the following plays, but it was the former who had the advantage as her attack as well as an error from Ateneo gave Adamson the third.
Both teams engaged in yet another close game in the fourth frame as they saw themselves tied at 21 late in that set, but back-to-back off-the-block kills from Buena allowed Ateneo to distance themselves by two.
Another attack from her allowed Ateneo to get the match point, and she followed it up with a strong kill to end the game in four sets.
Meanwhile, Almonte, Ishie Lalongisip, and Mayang Nuique each scored 11 for Adamson.
Both teams now stand at 2-4 in the standings.
Ateneo will go up against Far Eastern University on Sunday, 2 PM. to end the first round, while the Lady Falcons will try to bounce back when they face University of Sto. Tomas on Saturday, 12:00 noon.
Both will be held at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
