The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) announced Tuesday the composition of the Alas Pilipinas Women for the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand this December.
The federation has tapped players from the PVL and the UAAP, seeking to end the Philippines' decades-long gold medal drought in the SEA Games.
The country last won women's volleyball gold in 1993.
Veteran setter Jia de Guzman will be pacing the national team once more, and will be joined by fellow playmakers Julia Coronel and Mars Alba. The liberos in the pool are Dawn Macandili-Catindig, Jen Nierva, and Justine Jazareno, while opposite spikers include Alyssa Solomon, Leila Cruz, and Kat Tolentino.
There's a mix of young and veteran players in the outside spiker position as Shaina Nitura, Eya Laure, Vanie Gandler, Angel Canino, Bella Belen, and Alleiah Malaluan are included in the pool, while manning the net are middle blockers Dell Palomata, Maddie Madayag, Thea Gagate, Fifi Sharma, and Amie Provido.
“Nothing less than the gold medal,” said PNVF president Ramon “Tats” Suzara after the governing body for volleyball approved head coach Jorge de Brito’s roster.
The team will be holding a training camp from November 15 to 30 as part of their preparation for the biennial meet.
Notably missing from the pool are Petro Gazz standouts and Fil-American star spikers Brooke Van Sickle and MJ Phillips, who already played for the Philippines in the VTV Cup 2025 in Vietnam.
The announcement also came after the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) said that Alas Women's participation is in limbo unless the PVL abides by a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that paves the way for the team's preparation and "guarantees a potentially strong finish for the women's national volleyball team."
