National University opened its title defense with a straight-sets victory over University of Santo Tomas, 25-22, 29-27, 25-19, in the UAAP Season 88 on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Bulldogs wrapped up the match in one hour and 27 minutes, with Buds Buddin leading the charge with 16 points built on 11 attacks, three blocks, and two aces. He also tallied eight excellent receptions.
Leo Ordiales added 11 points, while Greg Ancheta orchestrated the offense with all 17 of NU’s excellent sets.
For UST, Josh Ybañez and Trevor Valera scored eight points each, with Ybañez also registering 15 receptions.
Earlier, Adamson University survived a five-set battle against Ateneo de Manila University, 26-28, 26-24, 30-28, 22-25, 15-12.
Rookie Jims Ducusin powered the Falcons with 23 points, while Joel Menor and Ahmed Tahiluddin contributed 17 and 14 points, respectively.
Aimar Okeke led the Blue Eagles with 23 points, while Amil Pacinio and Jian Salarzon chipped in 20 and 17 points, respectively.
